haberdashery & ribbons
The tactile quality of old silk and velvet, and the soft, faded elegance of vintage ribbon is a real delight – I’m always on the lookout, and my suppliers in France and Germany continue to find me lovely reels. I bring back boxes of vintage linen thread from Alsace, and occasionally stumble upon old shop stock – vintage millinery items, feathers, braid and tiny boxes of name tapes.
In times past, the embroidery of dowry linen was an occupation that women took seriously – in Germany, copper stencils were used to mark linen before it was embroidered with the initials of the bride-to-be, and I’m always searching for these lovely items.
